Letterkenny is one of the most affordable places to be a student in Ireland — but it comes with a catch worth knowing upfront: ATU Donegal has no on-campus accommodation at all, and a future build is still at the early, unfunded stage. So your accommodation will be private, and you'll arrange it yourself. Our ATU Donegal accommodation guide lays out every option.
The two main purpose-built blocks, Ballyraine Campus and Letterkenny Student Accommodation, both sit within a 6–8 minute walk of campus and are taking 2026/27 bookings on a first-come basis. Neither publishes prices online, so you'll need to email or call them for current rates — the contacts are on the hub. That's normal for Letterkenny: it's a smaller market where the providers deal directly with students rather than running slick booking sites.
For digs and house shares, the ATU Donegal Students' Union maintains an up-to-date accommodation list you can download — it's the best starting point, better than scrolling Daft alone. Rooms here are genuinely cheap by national standards, which is one of the real perks of studying in the northwest.
The thing to plan around is transport: Donegal has no rail line, so the nearest stations are Derry (about 33 km) and Sligo. Within the town, local buses serve the campus, and intercity coaches run to Dublin, Galway and Derry. If you're commuting from home, factor the coach times in early.
One upside of lower demand: unlike Galway or Cork, students who only sort their accommodation after CAO offers land on 26 August can often still find a room in late August or September. That's not an excuse to leave it late — contact the blocks and get on the SU list over the summer — but it's a less brutal scramble than the cities. Just don't let the relaxed pace tempt you into paying for a place sight-unseen; our scam-avoidance guide is worth two minutes.
