ATU Mayo in Castlebar is a small, friendly campus of around a thousand students — and like the rest of ATU, it owns no accommodation, so most students end up in digs or the town's one purpose-built block. It's a manageable market if you start early. The full rundown is in our ATU Mayo accommodation guide.
The single purpose-built option is Hawthorn Village on the Milebush Road — en-suite apartments, a gym, free parking, and handily located beside the train station with a morning bus to campus. One caveat to be aware of: its website still carries the old "GMIT" branding and undated pricing, so treat any figures you see there as a starting point and confirm the current 2026/27 rate and deposit directly with them before you commit. There's a reassuring policy on their FAQ, though — a full refund if you pay but don't end up getting a college place.
Beyond Hawthorn, most accommodation here is rooms in private homes, with digs typically €130–€150 a week, listed through the ATU StudentPad portal. House-share rooms are available too, generally cheaper than you'd pay in any city.
Castlebar's real ace is the train: it's on the Dublin Heuston–Westport line, so commuting from along that route is genuinely viable, and Hawthorn Village is right beside the station. Within town, the campus is a five-minute walk from the main bus stop. A Student Leap Card gives you discounted fares (the €3/€12 Dublin cap doesn't apply out west).
Because the market is small, the best move is to register on StudentPad and contact Hawthorn early in the summer, then lock something in by July or August. If money's tight, check what SUSI and other supports you qualify for — the non-adjacent grant rate is worth significantly more if you're moving to Mayo from further afield.
