If there's one number to remember about Athlone, it's the calendar: the big student villages here fill astonishingly early — one of them closed its waiting list back in April — so the students who win are the ones who book in winter, long before CAO offers. The anchor is Wellmount Student Village, a short walk from campus with all bills included in the rent — around €725 a month for a regular single and €795 for a larger single, with a €500 deposit. The catch: it's already fully booked for 2026/27 with the waiting list closed, and only reopens on the day CAO places are announced if rooms free up. It's first-come, not a lottery, which is exactly why winter booking matters. Glen Abhainn Village, 350 metres from the campus gates, is the other purpose-built option, though its site is out of date — contact them directly for current availability and rates.
For everything else, Tussu — the TUS Students' Union portal — is the place to look, and it carries the largest pool of digs and rooms in Athlone (well over two hundred listings at last count, with owner-occupied rooms around €135 a week). It's the official, vetted source, far safer than random Facebook groups.
Athlone's location is a quiet strength: it's a midlands rail hub on the Dublin–Galway line, so commuting from Mullingar, Roscommon or Tullamore is straightforward, and plenty of students do exactly that rather than relocate.
