If on-campus living is your priority, UL is the best-placed university in Ireland — it has the largest residential community of any Irish university, with eight villages and bills included in the rent. But there's a catch most guides skip: a 60 km rule prioritises students living far from UL, so if you're local you're unlikely to win the lottery.

Eight villages, bills included
UL's villages range from budget house-style rooms (Plassey 8-bed from €5,489/year) to en-suite apartments (Dromroe, Thomond, Cappavilla) and off-campus options like Troy and Groody. Crucially, rent includes all utilities, WiFi, the TV licence and UL Sport gym access — which makes the headline price far easier to compare against private rentals. The 60 km rule — and what it means for you
UL's lottery prioritises students whose home is more than 60 km from the university. If you live within that radius, assume you won't get an on-campus room and line up private rental or digs in Castletroy from April–June. If you live further away, the on-campus odds are genuinely good — apply during the 1–31 March window with your CAO number (no fee).
Watch the cancellation terms
UL's cancellation policy is strict: cancel after the deadline and you forfeit the €500 deposit; cancel mid-year and you can be liable for the full year's rent. Read the terms carefully before you commit, especially if your CAO course is still uncertain.
Private options and getting around
Castletroy rooms in shared houses run roughly €120–€185/week, and UL lists vetted digs via StudentPad. The campus has a major bus hub, and Colbert Station connects Ennis, Nenagh and the Dublin/Cork mainline. Note the €3/€12 Leap fare cap is Dublin-only.
