1. At a glance
Kildalton College is a Teagasc agricultural and horticultural college in the village of Piltown, Co. Kilkenny, just off the N24 Waterford to Limerick road, about 8 km from Carrick-on-Suir and 20 km from Waterford city (Teagasc). Teagasc describes it as its largest college, with over 1,200 students a year, and says SETU has delivered agriculture and horticulture courses there for over 40 years.
The CAO 2026 Level 7/6 list shows one course with the campus label "Waterford - Kildalton": SE506 Horticulture (2026 Round 1 points 310). The course is split between two sites. Teagasc says first-year students attend Kildalton 3 days a week in semester 1 and 4 days in semester 2; in second year, semester 1 is 4 days a week at Kildalton and semester 2 is paid work experience; in third year the days vary by elective. The rest is at SETU Waterford. SETU's course page says laboratory and business modules are taught in Waterford. Other SETU agriculture courses (SE502 Agricultural Science, SE508 Agriculture) also use Kildalton for agricultural modules, but the CAO lists them under Waterford, so their students should read this guide together with the SETU Waterford guides.
2. On-campus / college-owned accommodation
Kildalton has 88 single bedrooms with study facilities, shared bathrooms and laundry, and tea/coffee rooms (kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge/freezer). There are no cooking facilities in the college. Teagasc states this accommodation is available only to full-time Level 5 students. Rooms are offered to those who have accepted a full-time place and are allocated as course fees are paid.
Consequence for SE506 and other SETU degree students: Teagasc's Kildalton page says students on SETU higher-level courses arrange their own accommodation in Waterford City, Carrick-on-Suir or Piltown, and points SETU students to the SETU Accommodation Office. No SETU residence exists at Kildalton.
SETU's own residences are in Waterford (City Campus and College Campus on Cork Road). For 2026/27 SETU lists a EUR 300 deposit on application plus EUR 200 before check-in (EUR 500 total) and allocation by lottery; its page says the residences are fully booked for 2026/27 with a cancellation waiting list (EUR 300 deposit). See the SETU Waterford Cork Road guide for room prices and details.
3. Partner / private purpose-built student accommodation
For SETU degree students, SETU promotes SETU Student Pad (https://setustudentpad.ie/Accommodation), a free search site for accredited rooms, houses, apartments and digs near its campuses in Waterford, Carlow and Wexford.
4. Private renting & digs
Teagasc says a list of local private accommodation can be requested from the Kildalton college office (phone +353 (0)51 644400 per the Teagasc contact page). SETU students can also ask the SETU Accommodation Office ([email protected], 087 290 4612; Teagasc's Kildalton page gives (051) 306100 or (051) 302615 for it). Rent context, not a room price: RTB Rent Index Q1 2026, standardised average rent for all property types: Co. Kilkenny EUR 1,298 a month for new tenancies and EUR 1,065 for existing tenancies; Waterford City EUR 1,423 new and EUR 1,028 existing. Piltown is in Co. Kilkenny. Source: RTB Rent Index Q1 2026.
5. Getting around
- Teagasc states a free shuttle bus runs between SETU's Cork Road campus and Kildalton College during academic semesters; SETU's course page also mentions a free bus between the two sites.
- TFI Local Link route 891 runs Fiddown - Piltown - Carrick-on-Suir - Kilkenny. The timetable published by Transport for Ireland (route began 20 January 2025) shows 5 daily return services Monday to Saturday and 4 on Sundays and public holidays; it lists Piltown (Centra) among its stops. Check the current timetable at locallinkckw.ie, phone 0818 42 41 41 or 056 77 15 912.
- Student Leap Card: Transport for Ireland states a 50% discount for Student and Young Adult Leap Card holders on participating commercial bus operators.

7. Accessibility
SETU City Campus residence has accessible rooms (3 of the 66 College Campus rooms and many City Campus rooms; see the SETU Waterford guides). Contact the SETU Accommodation Office ([email protected], 087 290 4612) to discuss requirements. 8. International & mature/postgrad notes
Kildalton's on-campus rooms are limited to Level 5 students, so international students on SETU degrees should use the SETU Waterford residence rules (EUR 300 deposit, first come first served for international applicants, per SETU's international FAQ) or private options. SETU Global: [email protected], +353 5130 2724.
9. Timeline for Sept 2027 entry
2026/27 cycle shown as a guide: SETU Waterford residence lottery after 5 May, cancellations arriving after CAO Round 1 offers in late August. Because Kildalton rooms are not available to SETU degree students, treat private rentals around Waterford, Carrick-on-Suir or Piltown as the main option and start searching once you have a CAO offer.
10. Key facts to check before paying
RTB rules for student-specific accommodation and private tenancies apply: deposit capped at one month's rent, registered tenancy, tenancy versus licence. https://rtb.ie/renting/types-of-tenancies/student-specific-accommodation/

How to ask the college
- How long is the contract, and what are the exact move-in and move-out dates?
- What's included in the rent (electricity, heating, Wi-Fi, bins, insurance)?
- How much is the deposit, and when and how is it refunded?
- What are the cancellation terms if you don't get your CAO offer or change course?
- Are there rules for first years (priority, distance rules, age limits, lotteries)?
If you don't get a room
- Ask the accommodation office about waiting lists and late availability.
- Use the college's own listing service or students' union listings shown on this page.
- Consider digs (a room in a family home): see the digs and rent-a-room guide.
- Work out whether commuting is realistic using the transport details on this page.
- Start looking in spring. Don't wait for CAO offers in August.
