CAO Points Explained

Understand how CAO points are calculated from your Leaving Certificate results.

Summary

CAO points are calculated from your six best Leaving Certificate results, with each grade corresponding to a points value. A Higher Level Mathematics bonus applies where eligible. Points requirements vary by course and year. Verify current scales on the official CAO website (cao.ie).

How CAO Points Are Calculated

Your CAO points score is based on your six best results from a single sitting of the Leaving Certificate (or equivalent qualifications).

Each subject grade corresponds to a specific points value. Higher Level subjects award more points than Ordinary Level subjects.
