Studying in Poland as an Irish student
Medical universities in Warsaw, Krakow, Lodz, Lublin, Katowice, Gdansk, Wroclaw, Poznan, Bialystok, Bydgoszcz and Rzeszow teach medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy in English. Our database lists 47 health programmes and 7 other courses. Several universities publish a table that converts Leaving Cert grades into admission points, and some admit Irish applicants without an entrance exam. Fees are published in euro, US dollars and zloty.
How an Irish student gets in
The Leaving Cert route. Polish universities rank applicants on points converted from school-leaving results. Each university publishes its own Ireland table. Biology is the usual compulsory subject, with chemistry, physics or maths as the second.
- Medical University of Warsaw (WUM). Higher Level: H1 = 100, H2 = 88, H3 = 75, H4 = 60, H5 = 45, H6 = 20, H7 = 5, H8 = 0. Ordinary Level O1 = 100, with O2 to O6 matching the H2 to H6 values and O7/O8 = 0. A subject multiplier then applies (physics 0.6, maths 0.5 at basic level). Required: Biology and Chemistry at Higher Level, plus Physics or Mathematics at Ordinary or Higher Level. A missing subject can be replaced by an extra WUM exam. No minimum grade is published beyond a pass.
- Medical University of Wroclaw. Table from the 2027/28 admission conditions: grade 1 = 100, 2 = 88, 3 = 75, 4 = 63, 5 = 50, 6 = 38, 7 and 8 = 0. Higher Level is multiplied by 1.5. You need Biology plus one of Chemistry, Maths, Physics or Physics and Astronomy. The minimum is 100 points across the two core subjects and at least 30 in each.
- Medical University of Silesia, Katowice. Higher or Ordinary: 1 = 100, 2 = 89, 3 = 79, 4 = 69, 5 = 59, 6 = 49, 7 = 39, 8 = 0. Medicine needs Biology plus one of Chemistry, Physics or Maths at Higher Level, with at least 100 points including 40 in biology. Nursing and physiotherapy need Biology only, and Ordinary Level suffices.
- Medical University of Lublin. Separate Ordinary and Higher Level tables. At Higher Level: 1 = 100, 2 = 85, 3 = 75, 4 = 65, 5 = 55, 6 = 45, 7 = 35, 8 = 0. Biology plus two of Chemistry, Physics and Maths. You are excluded if you score under 60% in the certificate part, the interview or the test.
- Medical University of Gdansk. Higher Level only, maximum 30 points a subject: H1 = 30, H2 = 26.7, H3 = 23.7, H4 = 20.7, H5 = 17.7, H6 = 14.7, H7 = 11.7. Biology at Higher Level plus Chemistry, Physics or Maths at Higher Level. There were about 11.9 applicants per place in 2025 and 72 places for 2026.
- Medical University of Lodz. H1 = 100, H2 = 85, H3 = 75, H4 = 65, H5 = 55, H6 = 20, H7 = 10, H8 = 0. Two science subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths. The Admission Committee sets the threshold each year.
- Medical University of Bialystok. At least 100 points from two of Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Mathematics, on an internal scale.
Entrance exams and interviews for medicine and dentistry.
- Wroclaw and Katowice: no entrance exam for Irish applicants who hold the required subjects. Admission is by certificate points.
- Warsaw: an online WUM competency test in English: 80 multiple-choice questions (biology 30, chemistry 30, decision making 20), 100 minutes. Fee EUR 24. Standardised test scores (UCAT, BMAT, MCAT, GAMSAT, HPAT) are an alternative path, but most candidates are not exempt from the competency test, and any exemption must be confirmed by email in advance.
- Gdansk (medicine): a compulsory online exam in biology and chemistry (60 points), plus a Zoom interview of about 20 minutes (10 points) that covers English, motivation and selected subjects.
- Lublin: exempt from the separate subject exam for Irish certificates. Instead, a 20-question, 20-minute online terminology test, then a Zoom interview of 5 to 10 minutes (100 points, 60% minimum).
- Lodz: a 30-minute online oral exam on MS Teams, after you pass the points threshold. It covers motivation, socio-medical topics and two science subjects. Two attempts per year.
- Bialystok (medicine): no written exam. A Zoom interview of up to 100 points, with questions in two of four sciences and a check of your English.
Proof of English. This varies a lot.
- Gdansk states that an Irish diploma holder needs no additional English certificate.
- Wroclaw exempts certificates issued in Ireland if English was the language of instruction.
- Warsaw says English-speaking citizenship is not a basis for exemption. It does not say whether the Leaving Cert is accepted. Expect to need IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 87 or similar.
- Lublin requires a B2 certificate. Its pages do not state an exemption for Irish certificates.
- Lodz exempts EU citizens whose secondary education was in listed systems (IB, EB, OECD, EFTA, China, Ukraine) and otherwise asks for B2. Confirm with the university that the Leaving Cert qualifies.
- Katowice asks for B2 and accepts a certificate of graduation from a school taught in English as one option.
- Bialystok does not ask EU applicants for a certificate. English is assessed in the interview.
Documents. The Leaving Cert is recognised in Poland by operation of law (stated by Warsaw and Lublin), so no NAWA recognition statement is needed there. Typical steps:
- Katowice: original or notarised certificate with an Apostille (Ireland is a Hague party), a sworn translation only if not in English or Polish, and two signed photos.
- Wroclaw: original certificate with a sworn Polish translation.
- Lodz: legalised original diploma, sworn Polish translation, criminal register certificates from all countries of residence in the last 20 years, and Hepatitis B immunity proof.
- Warsaw: criminal register certificates covering the last 20 years, before clinical classes with minors.

Things that catch Irish students out
- English exemptions differ. Gdansk and Wroclaw exempt Irish school leavers. Warsaw and Lublin do not state one. Do not assume.
- Different routes for different universities. Katowice and Wroclaw rank by Leaving Cert points, with no exam. Warsaw, Gdansk and Lodz test you. Lublin interviews you.
- Subject level matters. Katowice and Gdansk require Higher Level for medicine. Warsaw wants Biology and Chemistry at Higher Level. Wroclaw weights Higher Level at 1.5.
- Document steps add up. Lodz asks for criminal record certificates for every country you have lived in during the last 20 years, with sworn translations. Katowice needs an Apostille.
- Most dates shown are last year's. Only Poznan, Lodz, Katowice (summer) and Bialystok list a window that reaches 2027.
- Fee years and currencies vary. Lublin charges in USD, Katowice per semester in PLN, and Bialystok warns of rises up to 30%. Poznan has not published the 2027/28 fee.
- Wroclaw's table is for 2027/28. The points table comes from the 2027/28 admission conditions, while its fee and dates are 2026/27.
