Study in Denmark from Ireland
Our database has 27 Danish programme rows: 13 verified and 14 partly verified. There are no health programmes. Tuition is published as DKK 0 for EU/EEA citizens. Copenhagen Business School (CBS) is the only institution in the data that publishes a Leaving Certificate grade rule. Other universities set subject levels in Danish terms, such as Mathematics A or English B. Applications go through optagelse.dk, with a deadline of 15 March at 12:00 noon CET.
How an Irish student gets in
Leaving Certificate rule (CBS). CBS asks for a minimum of 6 subjects passed. At least 2 must be at C3 / H5 or better at Higher Level. The rest must be passed at D3 / O6 / H7 or better. CBS converts grades to the Danish scale to give a GPA for quota 1 and quota 2. Subject rules: English B with a minimum grade of 6.0; Mathematics B (Irish Ordinary Level Mathematics is listed as Mathematics B); and History B, International Economics B, Social Studies B or similar (Irish History, Economics, Economic History, Classical Studies or Business at Ordinary Level are listed as Social Studies B). Upload official Leaving Certificate (Established) documents to optagelse.dk. Alternatives are not accepted.
Other universities. We found no published Irish grade rule. Aarhus University converts foreign grades to the Danish 7-point scale for quota 1. Aalborg University (AAU) asks for Mathematics A with a minimum average grade of 4.0 for its engineering programme. SDU has an Ireland page that gives the route but no Irish-grade table. Check each programme page linked under Sources.
Quotas. Quota 1 is by GPA. Quota 2 is by assessment, often a motivation letter, work experience and time abroad (Roskilde counts up to 12 months). CBS accepts an optional motivational essay for quota 2.
English proof.
- Aarhus University: an upper secondary leaving exam from Ireland with a passed English subject fulfils English B. No test needed.
- CBS: the Irish upper secondary exam fulfils the language requirement if the whole exam was done in Ireland and taught in English for 3 years.
- DTU: an approved test is required even if English B is met, unless you are exempt. The exemption covers native-speaker holders of an English-taught exam from Ireland, among other countries, with a passed academic English course.
- IT University of Copenhagen: an English test is required only for certificates from non-EU/EEA countries.
- SDU and Roskilde: English B must come from the upper secondary exam. IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo are not accepted for it. Roskilde's pages do not name Ireland.
Entrance tests. Most rows list no test. SDU uses uniTEST in 2027 for its five programmes: in person at Odense on 17 and 18 April 2027, or online from 20 to 25 April 2027. It has 95 multiple-choice questions over 2.5 hours, and the pass mark is 45 of 100 points. You must apply by 15 March first. VIA's animation bachelors require a portfolio and an admissions test.
Documents. Upload your diploma and grade sheets to optagelse.dk. AAU asks for grade sheets for the last 3 years and a signed Signature Page emailed by 15 March. CBS says that from the 2027 round, applicants who have already completed upper secondary education by the deadline must upload the official diploma and grade transcript by 15 March 2027 at 12:00 CET.
What it costs

Things that catch Irish students out
- Danish subject levels. Requirements read "Mathematics A" or "English B". These are course levels, not grades.
- Engineering needs Mathematics A. AAU, DTU, SDU Mechatronics and VIA Mechanical Engineering and Software all list Mathematics A.
- Some English tests apply to everyone. DTU requires an approved test unless exempt. VIA's Animation Workshop requires English B proof from all applicants, including native English speakers.
- Documentation comes later. Final documentation is due 5 July, but CBS now wants completed diplomas by 15 March 2027 from applicants who have already finished.
- No year on the page. 10 rows state "15 March" without a year.
- New or changing programmes. AAU's Applied Industrial Electronics is restricted in admission from 2027. UCN's architecture programme is awaiting final approval. VIA's Graphic Storytelling admits every other year, with the next intake in 2027.
FAQ
Do Irish students pay tuition in Denmark?
Our rows show DKK 0 tuition for EU/EEA citizens, with no application fee at AAU, Aarhus University and CBS. Fees apply to non-EU/EEA students. No academic year is stated on most of these pages, so check the fee page for your programme.
What Leaving Cert grades does CBS require?
CBS asks for at least 6 subjects passed, at least 2 at C3 / H5 or better at Higher Level, and the rest at D3 / O6 / H7 or better. Grades are converted to the Danish scale to give the GPA used for quota 1 and quota 2.
When do I apply?
Applications go through optagelse.dk. The annual deadline for foreign qualifications is 15 March at 12:00 noon CET, shown as 15 March 2027 for CBS and SDU. Final documentation is due 5 July. Several pages do not state the year.
Is there an entrance test?
Most rows list none. SDU's five programmes in our database use uniTEST in 2027: in person in Odense on 17 and 18 April, or online from 20 to 25 April. You must apply by 15 March first. VIA's animation bachelors require an admissions test.
Does my Leaving Cert English count as English B?
Aarhus University says an Irish leaving exam with a passed English subject fulfils English B. CBS accepts the Irish exam if the whole exam was done in Ireland and taught in English for 3 years. DTU still asks for an approved test unless exempt.
