Studying in the Czech Republic as an Irish student
The Czech Republic teaches medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine in English at Charles University, Masaryk University, Palacky University Olomouc, the University of Ostrava and the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno. Our database lists 19 health programmes and 12 other courses. Published health fees include EUR 7,500 for pharmacy at Masaryk, CZK 380,000 to CZK 440,000 for medicine at several faculties and EUR 24,250 at Charles University's First Faculty. Medicine and dentistry have entrance tests, and several have interviews.
How an Irish student gets in
Leaving Cert grades. The universities do not publish a Leaving Cert grade rule that we found. Check the university's own Ireland or admissions page, for example the Masaryk University medicine admissions page.
Exemptions do not cover the Leaving Cert. Several faculties let applicants skip the test with certain A-level, IB or other results. The Irish Leaving Certificate is not listed as an exemption route at the Second Faculty of Medicine (Prague), the Third Faculty of Medicine (Prague), Masaryk University medicine, or the Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy. Plan to sit the test.
Medicine and dentistry, faculty by faculty.
- Charles University, First Faculty (Prague). Two rounds, both in English. Round 1 is a 90-minute written test (biology, chemistry, and "General Science" or physics; 75 points). The Dean sets the pass threshold. Round 2 is an online Multiple Mini Interview: five 10-minute stations, 100 points. Only Round 2 points decide admission. Fee EUR 285. No English certificate is required for 2026/27.
- Charles University, Second Faculty (Prague). A 90-minute test of 75 questions (20 each in biology, chemistry and physics, 15 in logic). The best-scoring applicants go to an interview before a three-member committee, worth up to 90 points.

One attempt per admission year. Applications go through official in-country representatives, and no representative is listed for Ireland.
- Palacky University Olomouc. A test in biology, chemistry, and physics or maths. Administrative fee EUR 80. Non-native English speakers need a certificate (for example IELTS 6) or sit the university's English test. The faculty states it has no grade requirement.
- University of Ostrava (partly verified). Online test in biology, chemistry and physics, 30 questions each, pass limit 30 of 90 points. Czech language courses are compulsory. The 2027 intake is not published.

Things that catch Irish students out
- Masaryk applications run through representatives. The data says no representative is listed for Ireland. Contact the faculty before you plan around its dates.
- The Leaving Cert is not on the exemption lists. Check each faculty's list. Do not assume an A-level or IB rule applies to you.
- 2026/27 dates have gone. The First and Second Faculties of Charles University and UVS Brno have published only 2026/27 cycle dates, and those have passed.
- Fee years differ. Hradec Kralove gives no period or year, Olomouc gives no year, and UVS Brno shows 2024/25. The Second Faculty shows 2026/27 and Pilsen 2027/28.
- Conflicting fees. The Second Faculty's application fee is shown as CZK 2,500 on one page and CZK 880 on another.
- Authentication takes time. Pilsen wants notarised copies with an Apostille, with documents due 31 August 2027, and does not accept email.
- Third part of the First Faculty test. The faculty page says "General Science"; the university system says physics.
- Pilsen limits. Pilsen allows one application per year, with no retake and no transfers.
- Ostrava teaches Czech. Czech language courses and practical training in Czech are compulsory.
FAQ
Do I need an entrance exam for medicine in the Czech Republic? Yes. Every medicine and dentistry programme in our database has an entrance test. The Irish Leaving Certificate is not listed as an exemption at the Second Faculty, Third Faculty or Masaryk. Pilsen, Hradec Kralove and Olomouc state no exemption in our data.
Is there an interview? It depends on the faculty. The First Faculty uses online Multiple Mini Interviews. Hradec Kralove holds a 40-point oral interview. The Second Faculty interviews top scorers. Masaryk does not generally interview. Pilsen and Olomouc medicine do not state one.
How much does medicine cost? Published figures include CZK 380,000 (Masaryk, 2027/28), CZK 390,000 (Pilsen, 2027/28), CZK 420,000 (Second Faculty, 2026/27), EUR 12,500 (Olomouc) and EUR 24,250 (First Faculty, 2026/27). Compare the currency and year on each row.
When should I apply? For 2027, Pilsen, Hradec Kralove and the Third Faculty close on 30 April 2027. Olomouc and Masaryk run to 31 July 2027, with files due about two weeks before your chosen exam. Pilsen opens on 1 November 2026.
Does my Leaving Cert need an Apostille? Pilsen requires legalisation, either Apostille or super-legalisation, done in the issuing country. The First Faculty lists Ireland as an Apostille case, which a verified copy with confirmation from the school may replace. Check each faculty's current table.
