Our database holds 11 Belgian courses: 7 health programmes and 4 other bachelors. None of the health programmes is taught in English. Flemish medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine are taught in Dutch and admission is by a national exam on 2 July 2027. The French-speaking universities use a separate entrance competition. The English-taught bachelors we found are in business, digital arts and computer science. EEA tuition is EUR 1,181.40 for 60 credits at the Flemish institutions in 2026-2027.
How an Irish student gets in
Flanders (Ghent University and University of Antwerp, medicine). Both list the Irish Leaving Certificate (Established programme) as direct access to the diploma stage. The published rule is at least 6 courses including English or Irish and Mathematics, at least 2 subjects at H5 or higher, 4 subjects at O6 or H7 or higher, and a minimum of 350 CAO points. The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme and Leaving Certificate Applied are not accepted for direct access. Having the diploma does not secure a place. Medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine depend on the Flemish admission exam, which is the same for all Flemish universities.
The exam is multiple choice on paper and worth 240 points. One half tests mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology at Flemish secondary level. The other half tests generic competences, including empathy and communication and a short scientific text. A correct answer scores +3, a blank 0 and a wrong answer -1. You must score at least half of the points on each part to be ranked. To start the programme you must be favourably ranked and hold your secondary diploma by 30 September of the year of ranking.
Dutch language. Ghent requires Dutch at level B2 at enrolment. Passing the entrance exam for medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine counts as proof. Antwerp accepts at least one full year (60 credits) of courses taught in Dutch, or an ITNA certificate, a CNaVT Educatief Startbekwaam profile or Staatsexamen NT2 programme II.
Documents. Ghent asks for a certified true copy (copie conforme) of the diploma and transcripts. Antwerp says a listed EEA degree gives direct enrolment without an admission application. If a file is needed, documents must be legalised or carry an apostille, with a translation if they are not in Dutch, French, German or English.
French-speaking Belgium (UCLouvain, ULB, University of Liege). We found no published Leaving Certificate grade rule for these health programmes. Check each university's page in the sources. A foreign secondary diploma needs a decision of equivalence from the Federation Wallonie-Bruxelles equivalence service. In the 2026 cycle the page said to apply before 15 July. Medicine and dentistry use the ARES entrance and access competition: one test a year between 16 and 31 August (27 August in 2026), with registration on concoursmd.be. Non-resident candidates may not exceed 15% of admitted candidates.
For physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and veterinary medicine, the University of Liege fills non-resident places by random draw. The quota is 30% of the previous year's first-time intake for the first two and 20% for veterinary medicine.
English-taught bachelors. Howest lists the Leaving Certificate (Established, Vocational Programme) or a Level 5 Certificate at minimum 5 subjects including English or Irish, O6 or H7 or higher, and 200 CAO points. It requires an English B2 certificate and does not name the Leaving Certificate English result among accepted proofs. UCLL needs no language test if your diploma was issued in Ireland. The Brussels School of Governance lists no grade threshold and does not name Leaving Cert English as an exemption.

Things that catch Irish students out
- The exam decides medicine, not your points. Ghent and Antwerp accept the Leaving Certificate for the diploma stage only. You must also be favourably ranked in the Flemish exam. The start quota was 1,878 in 2025-26 according to Antwerp.
- The exam tests Flemish school science and penalises wrong answers. Antwerp advises revision if your school science package was limited.
- French-speaking places for non-residents are capped. ARES limits non-resident candidates to 15% of those admitted. Liege uses a draw.
- Equivalence takes time. Foreign diplomas need an equivalence decision for the French-speaking universities. The 2026 page said to apply before 15 July.
- Failed health entrance tests abroad can matter. Universities may refuse enrolment after two failed tests within five years.
- English-taught does not mean exempt from English proof. Howest requires a B2 certificate and does not name Leaving Cert English as accepted proof.
- Some figures are old. The Ghent private-market rents are from 2023, and the database note says they likely understate 2026-27. The ULB private-market average is from a 2021 survey.
- Several dates have no year. Brussels School of Governance and AP print a month and day only.
