Study in Austria from Ireland
Our database lists 21 bachelor courses and 4 health programmes in Austria. The health rows are Human Medicine at Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck and Dental Medicine at Vienna, all taught in German. The other courses are taught in English and include business, tourism, psychology and computer science. Public universities list no tuition for EU/EEA students within the study period. Private universities publish fees from EUR 8,000 to EUR 24,068 per year.
How an Irish student gets in
Leaving Cert route. The universities in our data do not publish a Leaving Cert grade rule that we found. Check the admissions page for your course (linked in the sources). Webster Vienna asks for a minimum secondary school GPA of 2.5 on a 4-point scale or a converted equivalent. It publishes no Leaving Cert conversion table.
General entrance qualification. The Medical University of Vienna describes the test for a foreign qualification (Universities Act s.64). It is accepted if it has no substantial difference from the Austrian Matura. Schooling must have lasted at least twelve years, general education must predominate, and six general subjects are expected: two languages, mathematics, one science, one humanities subject and one further general subject. If schooling was eleven years or general subjects are missing, up to four supplementary examinations may be prescribed. The rows name no Leaving Certificate subjects or levels for Irish applicants.
Medicine and dentistry. All four rows are Official-source checked (first pass) only, and the source marks the 2027 dates as expected or with reservation. Treat them as provisional.
- Admission is by the MedAT, one national test for all Austrian medical universities. It is held in German only, and so is the preparation material.
- For human medicine, Irish Leaving Certificate holders apply in the EU quota. At least 95% of human medicine places are reserved for the Austrian and EU quotas together, and at least 75% for the Austrian quota. The non-EU quota is a maximum of 5%.
- You choose the quota at registration. Only one Austrian university can be chosen per test.
- German C1 is required on admission, with no English test. Vienna accepts ÖSD C1, Goethe C1, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSH 2, DSD II or TestDaF TDN 4, and the certificate must not be older than three years.
- Graz asks for a certified school-leaving certificate and transcripts, with translations unless issued in English. Its certification step is an apostille for Hague Convention states, and Austria's bilateral exemption list does not name Ireland.
Other courses. Entry steps vary:
- CEU: interview if preselected; no standardised test (SAT/ACT optional); English proof required unless exempt. The page does not name the Irish Leaving Cert as an exemption.
- WU Vienna: in-person written entrance exam (2026 sitting: 30 June).
- FH Salzburg: multiple-choice test in English with a short essay. FH Wiener Neustadt: aptitude test and English assessment on campus. FH Upper Austria Steyr: English test.
- Die Angewandte: practical assignment, CV and a 600-word letter of motivation.
- IMC Krems: statement of motivation and a short essay.
What it costs
Public universities and universities of applied sciences. JKU, Klagenfurt, WU and Die Angewandte list 0 tuition for EU/EEA citizens within the programme duration plus two tolerance semesters. After that the standard fee of EUR 363.36 per semester applies. The student union (ÖH) fee is EUR 26.20 per semester in these rows. Universities of applied sciences list EUR 363.36 per semester for EU/EEA citizens (EUR 726.72 per year) at IMC Krems, FH Upper Austria and FH Wiener Neustadt, and EUR 363 per semester at FH Salzburg.
Private universities. CEU EUR 8,000 per year (2025/26 fee table), plus EUR 200 enrolment. Modul Vienna EUR 18,000 per year (EUR 9,000 per semester, fees as of 1 January 2026). Sigmund Freud University EUR 15,438 per year (from winter semester 2026/27), plus an EUR 550 admission fee. Webster Vienna EUR 24,068 per year (2026-2027 flat fee).
Medicine. For EU citizens within the non-contributory period, Vienna lists only the ÖH contribution (EUR 25.20 per semester, as stated on its page) and Innsbruck lists only the ÖH fee (EUR 26.20 for 2026/27). Graz says the ÖH fee is payable. At all three, tuition of EUR 363.36 per semester applies after that period.
Accommodation. The figures in our data come from the OeAD study portal, studyinaustria.at. They are national guidance, not university prices and not specific to Vienna, Graz or Innsbruck. A shared flat is about EUR 250 to EUR 450 per month. A student hall place is about EUR 450 per month, and the portal's total monthly budget is about EUR 1,200. It gives no year.

Things that catch Irish students out
- The MedAT is in German only, and German C1 is needed if you are offered a place. Plan the language early.
- You can sit the MedAT for one Austrian university only. The quota is chosen at registration.
- Medical university tuition of EUR 363.36 per semester starts once you exceed the non-contributory period.
- The apostille exemption list in Graz's document guidance does not name Ireland. Ask Graz what certification your Leaving Certificate needs.
- Vienna says a Latin supplementary examination may be required if Latin cannot be shown on the school certificate.
- The ÖH fee appears as EUR 25.20 on some pages and EUR 26.20 on others.
- For several private universities the published fee year is earlier than 2027 (CEU 2025/26, Webster 2026-27, Modul as of 1 January 2026). Expect to confirm the 2027/28 rate.
- FH Wiener Neustadt and FH Salzburg do not state whether Irish certificates need legalisation.
