What Are Holland Codes?
In the 1950s, American psychologist John L. Holland proposed that career satisfaction depends on the fit between a person's personality and their work environment. He identified six broad personality types, each associated with specific interests, skills, and values.
The model is often represented as a hexagon, with types that are adjacent (like Realistic and Investigative) being more similar, and types that are opposite (like Realistic and Social) being more different. Your "code" is typically your top 2-3 types — for example, someone who scores highest on Investigative, Artistic, and Social would have the code IAS.
The Six RIASEC Types
R — Realistic
Practical, hands-on problem-solvers who enjoy working with tools, machines, and physical materials. Often drawn to engineering, trades, agriculture, and technology.
Example careers: Electrician, Engineer, Mechanic, IT Technician, Architect
I — Investigative
Analytical thinkers who love research, data, and solving complex problems. They prefer working independently and thrive on intellectual challenges.
Example careers: Scientist, Data Analyst, Pharmacist, Doctor, Software Developer
A — Artistic
Creative, expressive individuals who value originality and self-expression. They enjoy unstructured environments where they can innovate.
Example careers: Graphic Designer, Writer, Musician, Animator, Interior Designer
S — Social
Helpers and communicators who thrive in roles involving teaching, counselling, and caring for others. They value collaboration and making a difference.
Example careers: Teacher, Nurse, Social Worker, Counsellor, Physiotherapist
E — Enterprising
Natural leaders who enjoy persuading, managing, and taking on business challenges. They're drawn to competitive environments and entrepreneurship.
Example careers: Business Manager, Lawyer, Marketing Executive, Entrepreneur, Sales Director
C — Conventional
Organised, detail-oriented individuals who excel at structured tasks, data management, and systematic processes. They value accuracy and order.
Example careers: Accountant, Financial Analyst, Administrator, Logistics Manager, Actuary
