When Do Open Days Happen?
Irish universities and colleges typically hold open days between October and January, with most concentrated in November and early January. Virtual open days are also common and can be a good first step before deciding which in-person events to attend.
Check each institution's website directly — open day dates vary significantly. Most institutions also offer virtual tours and recorded presentations year-round.
Before You Go: Research First
Don't arrive at an open day cold. Do some research in advance:
- Know the specific courses you're interested in
- Review the module list and course structure online
- Note the current minimum points (and whether they fluctuate year-to-year)
- Prepare specific questions you can't answer from the website
- Map out which presentations and talks you want to attend
Essential Questions to Ask
Ask Academic Staff
- What makes this course different from similar ones at other colleges?
- What research or industry projects are students involved in?
- How much of the assessment is exams vs continuous assessment?
- What do graduates typically go on to do?
Ask Current Students
- What was the biggest surprise about the course?
- What's student life actually like here?
- How well does the course match the brochure description?
- What would you change if you could?
- How good is the support if you're struggling?
Ask about Facilities & Support
- What career support is available?
- What's the student-to-staff ratio?
- How strong is the library and study space provision?
- What student societies are active?
- What is the accommodation situation?
Beyond the Presentations
The formal presentations are only part of the open day. Also pay attention to:
- The vibe: Does the campus feel alive? Are students friendly and engaged?
- The facilities: Laboratories, studios, libraries, sports facilities
- The commute: How long would it take you to get there every day?
- The city/town: You'll spend 3-4 years here — is it somewhere you'd thrive?
- Accommodation options: On-campus vs private, proximity and cost
After the Open Day
Don't let the experience fade. Right after each visit:
- Write down your gut feeling — first impressions matter
- Note anything that surprised you (positively or negatively)
- Compare notes with any parent or friend who attended with you
- Update your CAO choices if your visit changed your views
