What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a structured programme where you work for an employer and attend educational training (in an Education and Training Board or Institute of Technology) in alternating phases. You are employed from day one and earn a wage throughout.
Apprenticeships typically last 2-4 years depending on the trade or profession. On completion, you receive a nationally and internationally recognised qualification.
Types of Apprenticeships Available
Ireland now offers apprenticeships across a wide spectrum:
These are the established trades regulated by SOLAS, typically lasting 4 years:

Newer programmes spanning diverse industries, typically 2-3 years:
What You'll Earn
Apprentice wages vary by trade and phase. As a general guide for craft apprenticeships:
- Year 1: Approximately €5.50-€7.50/hour (employer-set)
- Year 2: Increase as skills develop
- Year 3-4: Significant increases, approaching qualified rates
- Qualified tradesperson: €35,000-€55,000+ per year (some trades significantly higher with overtime)
During off-the-job training phases, you receive a SOLAS training allowance. New generation apprenticeships typically pay your normal wage throughout.
